The Process

How Well Drilling Works

01

Site Evaluation

The process starts with a site evaluation. We visit your property, assess the soil conditions and available space, and determine the best location for the well. In Florida, the surficial aquifer is the primary freshwater source for most residential and irrigation wells on the Treasure Coast. The depth of your well depends on your location, the intended use, and the aquifer conditions on your property.

02

Permitting

Once the site is evaluated, we handle the permitting. Florida law requires a well construction permit before any well can be drilled, and all wells must be constructed by a licensed water well contractor. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is the permitting authority for Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties. We manage the permit application and ensure every well meets state construction standards.

03

Drilling & Installation

After permitting, we drill the well, install the casing and screen, develop the well to clear sediment, install the pump system, and test the water. The entire process typically takes one to several days depending on the depth and complexity. When we are done, you have a functioning well with clean water and a pump system sized to your needs.

Florida Law

Permits and Florida Regulations

Every new well in Florida requires a construction permit. The permit ensures the well is drilled by a licensed contractor and meets state standards for casing, grouting, and aquifer protection. In the Treasure Coast area, permits are issued by the South Florida Water Management District or its delegated local agencies. We submit the permit application, coordinate with SFWMD, and keep a copy of the permit on site during drilling as required by law.

Well abandonment is also regulated. If you have an old, unused, or damaged well on your property, Florida law requires it to be properly plugged and capped by a licensed contractor to protect groundwater quality.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to drill a well in Florida?

Yes. Florida law requires a well construction permit before any well can be drilled, repaired, modified, or abandoned. The South Florida Water Management District issues permits for Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties. We handle the permit application as part of every drilling job.

How long does it take to drill a well?

Most residential and irrigation wells are completed in one to three days, depending on the depth and soil conditions. The permitting process adds time before drilling can begin. We will give you a realistic timeline during your free estimate.

Do I need a permit if I already have city water?

Yes, you still need a permit. Many homeowners with city water drill a separate irrigation well to reduce their water bills. The permit and construction requirements are the same regardless of whether you have an existing municipal connection.

What does well drilling cost?

Cost depends on the depth, casing size, pump system, and site conditions. We provide free on-site estimates. Call 888-493-0984 to schedule yours.
